The Sin of Sodomy In American Society

"For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths." (Isaiah 3:8-12).

This could very easily be applied to America today. So much that God said to Israel and Judah could also have been said to the USA. How good it would be if the Congress, White House, Supreme Court, etc were required to read the Bible! The same warnings God gave to those kings back in Bible times ought to be taken to heart by our government.

In this text, God addresses the sin of sodomy. (Sodomy, is according to the 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language by Noah Webster, A crime against nature.”) Newer words are more common such as gay, lesbian, homosexual, alternate lifestyle, etc but for the sake of this article we will (for the most part) call it the way God calls it. Like those people back in that time, America is the point of not only accepting sodomy, but declaring it openly. When we look back in our history, we find it was not too long ago that sodomy – if it was around – was never talked about. I remember a time when it was shameful, and I am not yet 30 years old. Who would have thought they would be coming out of the closet in the huge numbers that they are and at the rate they are.

Look at what has happened in the past few years:

(Some people may doubt the last two, but do a search on the internet and you may be surprised.)

All this is VERY disturbing, and as I type these things, I am VERY concerned for my country! If all this has come to pass in a very short time, I often wonder what lies ahead for my children.

This subject has been discussed and debated in many circles – secular, religious, and political. But we are Baptists, different than any of these groups. We do not need to debate the subject, we simply need to look in the Bible to see what God says about the subject. We've already looked at one passage.

"Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly." (Genesis 13:11-13).

This is one of the earliest accounts of sodomy in the Bible. Notice how it is described: “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.” Modern liberal theologians would have us believe that God loves and accepts homosexual behaviour, that he not only will bring them into heaven but he will have them to be His preachers. Yet that is not the message I see from this. The ultimate result of their sins was, “Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.” (Genesis 19:24-25)

"There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel." (Deuteronomy 23:17).

God expressly forbid sodomy in Israel. God's law is a reflection of His holiness. For Him to change His mind about this would mean He would cease to be holy. And if He ceased to be holy, He would cease to be God. No! God has NEVER changed His mind about this subject!

"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13).

God put on this sin the punishment of the death penalty. He called it an abomination – something that He absolutely hates! Again, He has not changed on this. He still absolutely hates the sin of sodomy.

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants." (Leviticus 18:22-25).

It was because of the sin of sodomy that God destroyed those Gentile nations. America beware! I believe we are already seeing some warnings from God – if we would only pay attention. The war on terrorism, Hurricane Katrina, the drought that covered much of the country, etc are not coincidental.

"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet." (Romans 1:26-27).

Because of their idolatrous practices, God gave the heathen up to their own vile affections. (Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language defined vile as “Morally base or impure; sinful; depraved by sin; wicked; hateful in the sight of God and of good men.”) What were these vile affections?

Whatever He speaks of here is debatable. Some say this is speaking of abortion. And that is possible, since abortion is definitely against nature. However, it must have something to do with prostitution and/or sodomy. American culture would call it a lesbian. Whatever it was, it was vile and against nature (against what God intended for a woman to be.)

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly”

This passage leaves no doubt that the subject is sodomy. It is natural for a man to love a woman. Anything else is against nature, and very unseemly. It is obvious, even in the dimmest light of nature, that men and women were created for one another. It is unseemly (“Not fit or becoming; uncomely; unbecoming; indecent; Indecently; unbecomingly.” -Webster) for a man to be with a man in that way!

What about the idea that homosexuals were born that way?

There has been some talk of the idea that people cannot help being a sodomite because they were born that way. So they make it seem like a person's sexual orientation is like being born black or white. Yet is that the way it is?

For one thing, let me say that this idea has not been proven to be true. But let's say, for the sake of argument, that one day there some scientist does discover a “homosexual gene.” That would be an abnormality and a malfunction, results of the curse, not creation. And knowledge of this would not change the Bible's absolute authority of right and wrong.

Some babies are born addicted to crack and that does not excuse them to be addicted to drugs all their lives. Society rightfully expects them to overcome that.

Others point to the fact "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
of homosexual behaviour in the animal kingdom. And yes, I have seen that myself. Does that mean it is OK. First of all, since when should humans look to the animals to determine right and wrong? Man was created differently from the animals. And secondly, I have also seen cannibalism among the animal kingdom. Does that make it right? My dog eats its own poop with as much enthusiasm as we would have when we sit down to our favorite meal. I would never try to do such a thing! My point is that the answer is not in the animal behaviour, but in God's Word!

God's revealed word has told us that sodomy is a sin, plain and simple! And that is the way we must always view it!

"And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." (Matthew 19:4-6).

Jesus quotes here from Genesis, pointing out that in the beginning God created male and female. God did not create Adam and Steve, He made Adam and Eve. And that's the way He intended it. Anything else is purely rebellion against God. The man who lives the life of a sodomite, unrepentant of his sin will not be able to say to God “it wasn't my fault.” They, like everyone else who dies without Christ as their Saviour, will be cast into an eternal hell for their sinfulness!

"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14:34).

We as God's people in America need to make sure the world knows the warnings from God's Word about this awful sin! We need to be sure we elect leaders who take a stand for traditional marriage as defined in God's Word. I tell you, we may be headed down a path to complete and total recognition of so-called “Gay Marriage,” but I would not want my vote to be cast for any man or party who would encourage that to happen!

I'll be casting my vote for the man who will support a marriage amendment to the US Constitution defining marriage the way the Bible does – between a man and a woman. I want a man in office who will refuse to support so-called “gay pride” events. Combine that with other issues such as abortion, then my personal choice of who to vote for is narrowed.


Someone recently put the following scenario on a public forum recently:

Candidate A staunchly supports gay rights, and is pro-life
Candidate B supports gay rights, but is pro-abortion as well.

He then asked, “would you vote for A, B, or not at all?”


This is a good thought, but I'd have to say not at all! After all, both are abominations to God (See Proverbs 6:16-19 and Leviticus 20:13).  If those were my only two choices, I'd probably not vote!

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

I'd like to close this message out by saying there is hope for the sodomite. A person who is involved in homosexuality is not doomed to hell. He has hope in Jesus Christ. The same blood that was shed for me was also shed for some sodomites. How do I know? From this passage, we see that there were some who had once been caught in this sin. They once were effeminate, they once were abusers of themselves with mankind. And Paul says, “such were some of you.” Here's the point – that was past. The church at Corinth had no members who were still practicing it. God can and does save sodomites, but they leave that sin behind. They do not continue in it.
